a vamp for my cápán

A vamp for my cápán, 2021

a vamp for my cápán is a public art installation created in collaboration with the vesti_art project with ArtSpace Winnipeg. Located at 100 Arthur St. in Winnipeg's exchange district, this historic building houses ArtSpace and the Dave Barber Cinematheque. The piece was created to fit the indentation of the historic building's architecture, an arc like shape, similar to a moccasin vamp, which is the beaded tongue of the slipper. Using my cápán(great-grandmother in Cree)'s beadwork design, I produced my own rendition of the pattern to accurately reflect my own lived experience as a Cree-Métis person growing up away from my traditional territory, while also honouring my cápán. The beadwork was beaded onto wool, photographed and printed onto vinyl. You can read more about the project here.
