Rooster bag

Rooster bag, 2022

Vintage & modern beads on stroud, smoked moosehide, vintage cotton, caribou anter, jump rings.

7" x 34.5"

While perhaps unconventional in its construction, Rooster bag is informed by the historic octopus bag, combatting settler stereotypes of what Métis beadwork should look like. The bag communicates that we are a complex and ever changing people, and our art evolves alongside us.

Rooster bag was part of Gathering; an Indigenous Beadwork, Embroidery and Quillwork Exhibit running at the C2 Centre for Craft in Winnipeg, MB from March 3 - April 29, 2023. The exhibit showcased the work of five living Métis artists, alongside historic Métis beadwork pieces. The Gathering exhibit was the recipient of the Governor General's history award for Excellence in Museums.
