Handle with care, 2025

Handle with care is a reflection of my own position as someone implicated with holding many relationships to the land. The creation of the bag acts as a container for questions, rather than an answer or solution— about how we reconcile our conflicting roles within these relationships. How we can both nurture and exploit, resist and participate?

This new work was conceptualized by a brief moment of transition this past June, when I left my job as a treeplanter to attend an artist residency, while my home territory in Manitoba burned from afar. The tension between my participation in a for-profit reforestation industry and my identity as a beadwork artist from a family displaced from their traditional territory is the heart of this project. Through colour, material, and form, the piece confronts the complexities of varying relationships with the land, colonial histories, and survival; transforming a fleeting moment on the road into an ongoing artistic inquiry about responsibility, renewal, and the continuous act of being honest about our accountability to the land.
