The spirits of knowing, 2024
I created this piece during my time at the Sointula Art Shed residency in January of this year. Not knowing the specifics of this mysterious flower that found its way into my sketchbook at the beginning of the residency, I contemplated whether or not to use it as a beading pattern. I went ahead with it, following the intuitive feeling to bead the design. After completing the piece, an adventure with grief lead me to understand the subconscious message within the finished work — a visual metaphor for the complexities of life’s relationships, and the inevitability of growth and separation. So much beauty coexists with grief and sometimes, our creativity, in confluence with our subconsciouses, can give us insights that we have yet to fully understand. Seeing such moments in my life reflected in this piece months after it’s creation, “The spirits of knowing” embodies internal emotional expression, and questions the curiosity behind creating something that externalizes beauty, and how the push-pull of these internal and external relationships of our creative processes work to signal the onset of change. The foresight of this piece was excitingly mystifying and is a reminder that while we cannot choose when we have to grow — it is an inevitable shared connection we all have.
